The passenger service charge payable at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius will increase by 20 percent as from 1 May from 400 rupees (14.50 US dollars) to 500 rupees (18.20 dollars). According to officials at the Airports of Mauritius Limited, the move has been taken due to a recent improvement made at the airport's infrastructure and services. The works at the terminal cost 500 million rupees, they said. "There has been no rise in the charge since 1997. We asked for a rise of 40 percent last year and the government granted it in two phases - from 300 rupees to 400 rupees and now from 400 rupees to 500 rupees," they added. However, students, senior citizens (the aged) and children under 12 years old will be exempted from the charge, the officials said. According to the AML, 600,000 passengers transit through the airport yearly.
