Posted to the web February 19, 2001 Port Louis, Maurice Mauritian social security and national solidarity minister Samioullah Lauthan announced the construction of three new prisons in the island to alleviate overcrowding in existing jails. Lauthan told reporters Friday that the new prisons would be built at rose-belle and la chartreuse in the south of the island and at Forbach in the north. He described the situation in Mauritian prisons, currently holding 1723 inmates, as "very bad". He expressed shock at conditions in which young people were detained at the youth rehabilitation centre, saying, "this place is more a prison than a rehabilitation centre." Lauthan said the government obtained the help of amnesty international to review the prison situation, and an expert from the London-based agency is expected in the country on 23 February.
