Mauritian Deputy Prime Minister Paul Berenger on
Thursday launched a fisherman welfare fund at Domaine Les pailles, near Port
Louis. He said the fund would give fishermen easy access to bank loans as
well as provide scholarships for their children.
Berenger recalled how the lagoons around Mauritius was being overexploited and damaged throughout the years. "Dynamites, underwater fishing, hotel, domestic and industrial pollution and sand extraction have caused multiple damages to the lagoons," he said. "We shall start by offering a life-jacket to every registered fisherman," the minister of fisheries, Sylvio Michel said. He said that a fisheries development authority has been created to manage the lagoons, the fishing banks around the island and to train fishermen. Meanwhile, the five-month ban on seine fishing was lifted Thursday when some 300 fishermen resumed using the method that will last till October. The government decided recently to ban seine fishing as from 2005. Michel said that studies by the Albion Fisheries Research Centre showed that seine fishing was damaging to marine environment. |
