The Mauritian minister of environment, Rajesh
Bhagwan said the island would eliminate completely the chlorofluorocarbons
(CFC) which constitutes a hazard to the ozone layer. Bhagwan made the
remarks at a workshop on the theme 'Recovering and recycling of CFCs' held
at Ebene, 10km south of Port Louis.
He said that Mauritius has set up a program to start the phasing out of this substance as from 70 tons of CFC annually in 1992, the island now uses just 38 tons. "We are expecting a further reduction of 10 tons of CFC consumption by March 2001," he indicated. During the workshop trainees were taught how to recover the refrigerant from a refrigerator before repairs and how its recycling is effected before recharging. Do you think Mauritians are not aware enough of pollution affecting the ozone layer or do you think they simply do not care about this important problem? Should the environment ministry give more details about its "CFC elimination" program? Should people know exactly how the ministry is going to proceed and control its application? Many people do not know what CFC is and what other substances threaten or affect the ozone layer. What do you think should be done to make Mauritians feel more concerned about their environment?
