The Mauritian Prime minister's office announced
Wednesday that 60 containers of food and clothing and 25 million rupees (1
USD = R27.50) were collected during the past two weeks in favour of victims
of the 26 January earthquake which hit the Indian state of Gujarat.
According to earlier reports, the earthquake left 30,000 people dead and hundreds of thousands of people lost their personal belongings. Dinesh Ramjuttun, adviser to the Prime minister, said: "We planned to send 20 containers of food and clothing to the victims but we have filled 60 of them with donations from the general public." According to him, part of the food and clothing collected would be shipped to Mozambique where some regions have been hit by floods during the past days. Ramjuttun indicated that the containers would be shipped to India and Mozambique soon under the care of the Mauritius Ports Authority. Meanwhile, several thousands of people attended the Open day operation organised by President Cassam Uteem in favour of victims of the earthquake at State House, Le Reduit, 12 km south of Port Louis. The money collected was credited to the Prime minister's Gujarat Relief Fund. |
