Posted to the web February 23, 2001 February 23, 2001 - Port-Louis, Mauritius, Indian Ocean Students from 42 colleges in Mauritius will be initiated to quality circles as from this week. This initiative by the Private Secondary Schools Association (PSSA) and the National Productivity and Competitiveness Council is destined to promote the quality culture among the student population through active participation in curricular and extra-curricular activities. "The quality circles in schools would be like forums where the students will be able to discuss and prepare strategies to improve the quality of life in school establishments," Gopala Ramasawmy, director of the PSSA said. He said staff participation as well as encouragement and motivation from school management would be an added value. According to him, "this would go a long way bringing about this value-based transformation and in enhancing the overall performance of the school." The director of the PSSA recalled that the main function of a quality circle is to meet regularly and to identify and analyse problems and then to suggest solutions to the management. Ramasawmy added that students would be called upon to suggest solutions to overcrowded classes, damaged furniture, poor atmosphere and poor discipline at schools.
