The Central Statistical Office in Port Louis
says that sugar production will reach 620,000 tons this year as compared to
569,289 tons in 2000 and 373,294 tons in 1999.
It said better climatic conditions that prevailed last year resulted in an increase of 31.6 percent in the production of cane: 5,109,500 tons in 2000 as compared to 3,882,597 tons in 1999. The Office further said that following the diversification programme and the conversion of tea plots into sugar cane plantation, the area under tea plantation stood at 670 hectares in 2000 as compared to 3,000 hectares in 1999. "Because of excessive rainfall in certain regions where tea is cultivated, production of green tea leaves for 2000 was lower by 9.7 percent: 6,440 tons as against 7,134 tons in 1999," it noted. Production of black tea dropped by 10.9 percent from 1,473 tons in 1999 to 1,313 tons in 2000. Regarding tobacco, the total area harvested in 2000 increased by 15.5 percent: 446 hectares as against 386 hectares in 1999. But the production of tobacco leaves remained nearly at the same level of 646 tons. Citing statistics from the Agricultural and Research Extension Unit, it said that food crops recorded a high increase of 31 percent in 2000 as compared to production in 1999. The Statistics Office also indicated that production of beef from live cattle increased by 4.8 percent in 2000 to reach 2,705 tons as against 2581 tons a year earlier. Beef production from the slaughter of imported cattle rose by 7.5 percent from 2,293 tons to 2,465 tons whilst local beef production fell by 14 percent from 279 tons in 1999 to 240 tons. Meanwhile, total fish production dropped by 25.3 percent from 10,572 tons in 1999 to 7,892 tons in 2000. Following contraction in the activity of the tuna fishing enterprise, a severe drop of 33.5 percent was recorded: 5,582 tons of tuna fish was caught in 2000 compared to 8,397 tons in 1999. On the other hand, fresh coastal fish production rose by 6.2 percent: 2 310 tons in 2000 as compared to 2 175 tons in 1999.
