Thousands of sugar workers in Mauritius Saturday
in Port Louis staged a peaceful protest to demand better working conditions.
Carrying placards and banners and chanting slogans during the march, the
protesters demanded to have a 40 hour-week during harvest, equal salaries
for men and women workers and a guarantee of job security.
Union leader Jack Bizlall said the workers have given a 10-week deadline Saturday to the industry to positively reply to the workers' demands. "If the demands are not met by the start of the next harvest season scheduled for the end of July, workers will start a go-slow movement culminating into a general strike in the sugar industry," he said. Do more and more Mauritians often resort to strikes to obtain what they want or do you think the majority is mostly passive in general and accept unfair working conditions, while only hoping for a change? Do you think everyone should go out on strike to obtain satisfaction each time there is a problem? According to you, are strikes gradually forming part of the island's customs?
