The New Mauritius Hotels Group announced
Wednesday investments worth 1.3 billion rupees in the construction of a new
hotel, The Dinarobin, in the south of the island, and the renovation of Le
Paradis Hotel.
Group directors said The Dinarobin, a 174-room structure, would be ready by June 2002. They indicated 325 jobs would be created. According to its annual report, the NMH's revenue grew by 7 percent last year to reach 1.9 billion rupees while profits were 324.4 million rupees compared with 350.4 million rupees in 1998/1999. (27.8 rupees = 1 USD). NMH owns seven hotel establishments in the island - The Shandrani, Le Paradis, Trou-aux-Biches Village, Royal Palm, Le Cannonier, Le Mauricia and Le Victoria. They attracted 101,483 tourists last year. Should there be an increasing touristic development on the south of Mauritius? Some say the south should be kept "untouched" since it is the only part of the island that has not yet been affected by or overcrowded with hotels. Do you agree with this opinion? Are hotel promoters paying enough attention to environment and locals' reaction towards any touristic development?
